Today's 3. December 13, 2023. D. Todd Fox. 1. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their patience and understanding during today's power outage. Our students and teachers were outstanding (nobody just makes things work and roll with the punches like teachers). We are blessed....please make sure our teachers know that. Question: Why would we get out of school early due to a power outage? Answer: We do have battery backups for our fire alarm system...but there are other potential safety areas if we have no power for an extended period of time. 2. We had two outstanding Christmas Concerts. We have so many quality programs at Pikeland and our music department is one of those. Students sounded great (so much talent). Huge crowds (they were so respectful). And our music directors rock (Justin Bangert, Chardy Bangert, and James Feldpausch). 3. It looks like we are going to dodge winter weather before Christmas break (knock on wood). But, a couple of things: Our school district is 326 square miles. This makes us one of the larger unit school districts in the region. How will everyone be notified if a "snow day" will be utilized? School Thrillshare (text message, phone call, and email), KHQA, and WGEM. I usually try to send the text message first. What time will these decisions be made? I cannot commit to a specific time. Ideally, I would make the decision by the night before or by 5:30 AM the day of...but the weather is not always cooperative. But, please remember, it is never too late to make the right decision. Student and staff safety always trumps inconvenience. Parents always have the right to decide whether or not road conditions are safe for our students to come to school.

South School Music and Art Appreciation Over the past few weeks Mrs. Boren, the South School music teacher, has been introducing the Kindergarten - Second grade students to 'Picture the Music' a music and art themed activity in conjunction with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The students listened to music and then painted what they thought the music would look like. The PHS Art Club then judged the artwork and chose 2 Kindergarten, 2 First Grade, and 3 Second Grade pieces to send in to the competition. Congratulations to the artists!

Today's 3. December 8, 2023. D. Todd Fox. 1. On December 4, 2023, the Pikeland Board of Education hired me as their interim superintendent for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year (June 30, 2024). We are currently working with the search firm, School Exec Connect, to find a full-time replacement beginning July 1, 2024. I am a retired Illinois superintendent and according to teacher retirement system rules, I can only work 120 days or 600 hours. I have 100 days remaining. 2. I had the opportunity to watch our 8th grade girls play in the sectional on Wednesday night. Three quick thoughts: A. Congratulations to our coaches and players. Outstanding job! B. I loved the classiness and respect of our student body during the National Anthem. That is how we do it. That is a tribute to our parents and principals. C. It is always a good night when Brooks & Dunn's Boot Scootin' Boogie is played during warm-ups. A shout-out to DJ Clint Weir (who also doubles as our school resource officer...and one of the best in the business. So blessed to have him.) 3. We are entering Christmas Concert season. The Pittsfield High School Christmas Concert is Sunday, December 10th at 1:00 PM. (Please note that time.) The Pikeland Community School Christmas Concert is Tuesday, December 12th at 7:00 PM.
